Recent studies have indicated the number of wild tigers has dropped to 3000-3500 in 2010. As many live in isolated and small pockets not connected to others, it has to be expected the lack of new genes will have severe consequences. Most tigers are doomed. It seems only animals living in the Terai and in the RFE could stand a chance in the long run. And the long run would be decades in my dictionairy. But a report from TRAFFIC suggests tigers are poached in those areas as well:
Most poached tigers pop up in small parts in some form in China and Taiwan. It's a very lucrative business, as fewer animals is higher prices. A friend now working and living in China for some time wrote he even encountered complete skulls in the most unexpected places. The photographs I saw, showed most of these probably belonged to wild animals. One can only hope the Chinese will be able to cope with the situation quickly. But traditions take a long time to change.
I propose to dedicate this thread to tigers. Everyone able to retrieve photographs (old and new) and information of value (old and new) is invited to share these on this thread.
I also propose to start similar threads for other species.
